Lorraine, Pete & Eva

I’ve been playing Lorraine James on the show since it started the show and her levels have remained consistently high. A couple of weeks ago she released a new EP – ‘Five a Day’ for free, on Bandcamp and then deleted it on New Years Day (though it is still available on Dropbox). For something treated quite so throw-away by the artist, I didn’t expect it to be quite this good.

From Enfield in North London (the colourful Alma Estate used as the cover to her first album on Hyperdub), James’ sound draws on ambient, glitch, IDM, drill/grime and the releases have grown more personal no over time, leaning into her queer, Black British experience. This ‘Five a Day’ EP recalls that first hyperdub LP, with elements of footwork/jersey to go with the staccato glitch.

I think I was fairly late to the Pete Um party but I l’ve now had a fair few years to dig through the his back catalogue. I loved that Pete contributed to the Exquisite Stitch thing I did back in October. He’s a lovely outsider oddball with an ear for a tune and a great sense of humour. Often referred to as a ‘tape-poet’ he uses an array of has-been devices to soundtrack his surreal but hooky pop lyrics.

The ‘Director’ track I played comes from his 2019 album ‘As you were’ – I haven’t really worked out its meaning – though it’s possibly about town planning (?) – “It’s all about planning / The centre of anger / I’ll make decisions / That affect people”.

Though she’s been recording for around 13 years, Eva808 is a new artist to me to me this year. Her real name is Eva Jóhannsdóttir, and from Iceland, but currently residing in Sweden. I’ve played two tracks from her new ‘ÖÐRUVÍSI’ (which means “different”), including ‘Acid Shower’ on this week’s show – and her sound has progressed from its more grime/dubstep/bass music orientation of her earlier work (if retaining some of the sounds and tics) to something more global (this track has arabic overtones), expansive and almost soundtrack orientated.

The rest is the usual Woolies pick ‘n’ mix. There are some mic problems circa the 45-60 min mark (me sounding like a tiny man in a box) but the music’s sounding fine throughout…
