I opened this week’s show with a track by (Remi) Abadir, which is on the new ‘Ison’ release put out by SVBKVLT (the 60th release of the fine UK label). The album draws on the field recordings of Coptic, Syriac, Maronite, Greek Orthodox and Catholic chants and choirs – a relic of Abadir’s blurred memories and nostalgia growing up in multi-faith Cairo and a change from the more club-adjacent sounds of his last ‘Mutate’ album. The ‘Agios O Theos’ track appeals to me because it’s slow build (it could only really work as an opening track on the show) into something quite stirring – sounding bombastic – almost like Laibach – by the end.
My Irish roots and regular visits always tends me towards checking out what going on musically across the Irish Sea. Whilst I’m enjoying how the Lankum-propelled Nu folk scene is playing out, I’m perhaps more interested in things like the culchie surrealism releases of Dollar Pickle (in Kerry) and Scauldwave (in Wexford). While perhaps not linear or necessarily conscious – these sounds can be linked back to earlier experimental music is Ireland, which has been compiled in a new release by Nyahh Records. Called ‘Under the Island: A Compilation of Experimental Music in Ireland 1960 – 1994’ and looking to unearth a hitherto unknown strand of Irish avant grade music, this brings together a mixture of sound art, music concrete, radiophonic style sounds pieces as well as more out there prog/pysch stuff. The I track played, from 1979, was by Nigel Rolfe and called ‘Lake Waters of Sorrow’. It centres on a haunting, almost Arabic-sounding chant over a talking voice and a quiet simple drum sound.
Later on the in show I played a great video games track ‘Weapons X Lab’ by Dylan Beale. This mixed beautifully (if I can blow my own bugle) with the classic 80s electro track ‘Night Creatures’ by DMX Krew. The Dylan Beale track is on a reissue of the ‘Adamantium’ video game soundtrack (on Sneaker Social Club), which originally came out in 1994, when Beale was also producing hardcore and jungle tracks. Momentum for the release was built on the re-discovery of the ‘Tri-Fusion’ track a few years ago, which many (rightly) labelled as proto-grime – a precursor to music that was both similarly made on limited technology and also heavy influenced by games music. This ‘Weapons X Lab’ is a minimal monster of a track using clipped bass loops and cyborg yelps.
The rest of the show included Chief Keef’s (sort of) homage to Justin Beiber, some South African Gqom, more brilliant Brazilian phonk, Palestinian artist’s field recordings and later period Duke Ellington. Listen to it all here…
